We have never travelled with anyone except ourselves, and have pretty well never made use of a travel guide. Not really wanting to deal with Africa on our own, we poured through brochures and website forums trying to find an organization that suited us.
Not cossetted, but not parties every night either. Hiking yes, bungee cording no. Not for the average retired person but not for the average 20 year old. We had our must see list of places and finally whittled it down to Drifters, an African owned and operated tour company that took groups of no more than 16 on adventure tours of varying degrees of 'adventure'.
This is the first of two tours we are taking, and includes lodge stays instead of camping (our 2nd tour is all about camping!). Even so, we have been a bit surprised at just how much time our old way of travelling takes - we do not have to figure out which mode of transport will take us to where we want to go, or where we are going to stay when we get there, or where we're going to eat, etc. etc.
And here we are in the middle of the wilderness, in a log cabin built on stilts above a semi-tropical forest and the river Sabie, surrounded by beauty on the outside, and an ensuite and fire in the main room inside. And we're in Africa! Gee, life's tough.
